When I was in high school, I was in a record store in New Hope on a class trip once. One of the cutest, coolest girls in my class was in there, too, so I got up the nerve to ask her if she could recommend me a good tape to buy (they still sold tapes in the record shop then, ancient times!). Without hesitating, she picked up a copy of Sonic Youth’s Goo and handed it to me. ”Buy this.” I probably played that thing to death in my old Walkman, jamming away the teenage blues while practicing ollies on my skateboard in front of my house. To this day, it remains one of my all-time favorite albums and I am a lifelong fan.
Last night I went to see a huge line-up of avant-garde and Americana bands paying tribute to my late friend Jack Rose. Thurston Moore played. Imagine my fanboy luck when I stepped outside for some fresh air and there he is, standing all alone smoking a cig. I’m not one to pass up that sort of opportunity, so I struck up a convo with him and of course had a quick photo snapped. Seriously one of the coolest dudes on planet earth. <3
